First Wife Bribed for Understanding

Sidelights: First Wife Bribed for UnderstandingArab News

YANBU, 26 February 2008 — Ah, the complexities of having multiple wives. Some may think this makes life easier, considering that multiple wives means multiple housecleaners and multiple food-preparers and if one gets on your nerves you can go hang out with the other one until the first one behaves properly. But in fact it’s not as easy as it sounds to have a number of women in your life: life ain’t easy for a player, as some might say. So it may come to no surprise that — according to the daily Al-Madinah yesterday — a man lavished his first wife with a grand fête filled with expensive gifts and jewelry when she did not dispute his desire to marry a second woman. Perhaps there is no better way to reward a woman for allowing you to marry another woman than to give her lots of shiny things.

If it works for her, who are we to say anything?

LOL! The woman probably thought "some other person can have this LOSER". :D
She would have an extra day(s) off, someone else can cook/clean etc. So who are WE to say anything??????? sf

I don't care what my husband gave me, even if it were a million dollars, I would never consent to him sticking it in another woman.

But alhumdulillah he rewarded her, he could have just gotten married and told her to deal with it. I think it shows he has a good heart and loves her. MashAllah.

If I were her husband I would wonder why she was so agreeable.

Would you say the same of a woman who chose to be a prostitute?

I'd never consent either, but it takes all kinds...

sf- I doubt a woman who gets this kinda treatment does much cooking or cleaning...probably has a team of maids.

Molly- most men take the "deal with it, it's my right" route so maybe he's all right.

cairogal- I always tell my husband, "don't piss off the person who makes your food". They may want to test his hair if he kicks off in the next few months:-P

anon- sooo not in the same category. How many women out there are, western or eastern, that know their husbands have mistresses and yet they stay with them? Both women and the husband will be within the bonds of marriage, all children resulting from this union are legitimate and their father's responsible for them and they're not spreading diseases all over town.

Mona- Each couple has their own dynamics. Some women here are so involved with their families and social lives and/or work that they barely notice whether their husbands are at home or not. My entire life revolves around my husband so I'd be impacted strongly if he were to marry again.

Yeah, I couldn't do it either... So not sharing my husband!

Jas & I joke on the subject - he says he couldn't handle another woman...

But like everyone says... if she's ok with it... and at least he consulted her, that was a bonus point in his favour. & the shiny things didn't hurt either :-)

mama kalila- I think I'm so low maintenance that it could inspire DD to take another wife, thinking that every woman's as easygoing as me.

It may also have been a way to appease her family? No way would I share my husband. Man, he'd rue the day; I'd be such a sulky somebody!
